Scholars have long regarded 'Bread, Politics and Political Economy in the Reign of Louis XV' (1976) as marking an important moment in the study of the social, political and cultural history of eighteenth-century France. 'The Stakes of Regulation' is the companion volume to a new edition of this landmark study, revealing how Kaplan's thinking has evolved in reaction both to the changing intellectual, epistemological, historiographical and socio-political environment, and to the significant scholarship that has been accomplished during the past forty years. KAPLAN Idéologie, conflits et pratiques politiques dans les corporations parisiennes au XVIIIesiècle Cet article examine la discordance entre l'image de concorde et d'unité que les cor~porations essaient de projeter en leur sein comme à l'extérieur, et l'expérience récur~rente des dissensions internes. L'unité des communautés était en effet minée par des conflits sur la composition de leur direction, sur leur gestion et leurs buts. Au sein-même de certaines corporations, de véritables partis pouvaient s'organiser, en compétition pour le pouvoir. De façon curieuse, ces conflits internes imitaient les conflits politiques externes. Aussi la vie corporative a-t-elle pu constituer, pour un grand nombre de maîtres, une sorte de propédeutique à la socialisation politique, un précieux apprentissage pour les combats à venir.

Si l'on prenait l'oeuvre publiée de Jean Meuvret, disparu en 1971, comme indicateur de son influence, on aurait tort. Il exerçait une puissante influence non écrite par une pédagogie rayonnante qu'il livrait dans ses articles à des milliers de lecteurs, et dans son séminaire à des centaines d'élèves venus d'un peu partout dans le monde, quasiment en pèlerinage. Meuvret était un maître de l'article, genre littéraire et scientifique plus délicat et exigeant qu'on ne le pense communément. Ce n'est pas qu'il disait plus en trente pages que d'autres en trois cents ou mille : comparaison mal construite, voire odieuse. Mais il visait autre chose. Meuvret voulait corriger, secouer, changer notre façon de voir et de concevoir. Il cherchait à ouvrir ou rouvrir des débats. Grand chercheur d'archives, il distillait son érudition au lieu de l'étaler dans ses articles et la mettait au service de sa pédagogie. Tout à la fois, il renouvelait le questionnaire et s'efforçait de répondre lui-même à quelques questions décisives.
